I don't know if anyone still reads blogs or if this is an outdated platform for content creators, but I see that people are still finding my old headband pattern and commenting on it occasionally. If you see this, I do still get emails from the blog and will help in whatever way I can in your crocheting/knitting journey. I have taught several friends and family members how to knit and enjoy helping people.</p><p>I've given birth to 2 children since I last wrote a blog post, and they are finally at ages where they let me knit and crochet without needing childcare. (Although a lot of my knitting is still regulated to during church service or when they are otherwise occupied!) They love asking me to knit washcloths to wipe their faces after meals. And occasionally will ask for a hat or socks. My elder child is curious about knitting, but does not yet have the dexterity to knit on his own. I'm hoping someday he'll be able to join me in making things!</p><p>I don't normally create patterns anymore, nor do I try to sell my creations. I've been mostly making baby blankets and crocheting snowflake Christmas tree ornaments for the past few years. With the occasional adventure with clothing from other people's patterns. I definitely recommend the Pressed Flowers shawl ($5) and the Diamond and Lozenge Baby blanket pattern (FREE). Both can be found on Ravelry. </p><p>I'm currently in the process of mastering knitted socks for people who are not my shoe size. Thus far I have made socks only for people who can try them on while I am constructing them. I have 8-9 pairs to make before Christmas. Wish me luck!</p><p><br /></p><p><b>Pressed Flowers link:</b></p><p>https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pressed-flowers-3</p><p><br /></p><p><b>Diamond and Lozenge Baby blanket link:</b></p><p>https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/diamond-and-lozenge-baby-blanket</p>Andromedahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001698668018659392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387264103689517632.post-43205160242250553122015-02-28T11:56:00.002-06:002015-02-28T11:56:44.713-06:00February 2015 So this month I turned 25...and proceeded to get minimal crafting done. We had a week or so of ice and days off work, which should have been a productive time. Unfortunately, it actually meant that my schedule got all out of sorts and I reverted back to my college life of staying up ridiculously late while binge watching TV shows and playing copious amounts of video games. I am slowly adjusting back to the life of adulthood. It only took me 2 years the first time, so this should be a cinch! *wink*<br />
<br />
I did make a cute little hat this month. I woke up one day and decided I wanted to crochet a flower. And of course, it needed a hat to give it purpose. After knitting a lot last month, I was starting to miss my crochet hooks. Also I've gotten a bit frustrated with the red scarf I'm knitting, so I needed a short break. I haven't attached the flower yet, because I'm a slacker, but I will do so this weekend.<br />

I had a rough week at the beginning of the month, so I grabbed some yarn and a circular needle from Walmart to cheer myself up while grocery shopping. The Red Heart Boutique yarn that I used last month turned out really well, so I bought a couple more skeins to play with.<br />

Other than that, I visited a couple of different local yarn stores (LYS) this month to spend some of my birthday money. The lovely husband drove me to the <a href="http://knaughtyknitter.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Knaughty Knitter</a> one day to pick out my birthday yarn...but I forgot that they are closed on Wednesdays until we were already in town. So I just went the next day after work and went over the stated budget. (When I got home the husband told me that he expected me to go over...and that I actually spent less than he had expected. lol) I bought some beautiful lace weight yarn, a set of double pointed bamboo needles, a circular needle, and some blue sock weight yarn. I'm not sure what I will make with the purple yarn, but the blue yarn is for a pair of gloves for my secret sister. I have until May 11th to make them, so I should probably get started on that soon.<br />

This month I visited some family in Huntsville, AL and was given some spending money by my grandmother. I spent most of it on clothing, but I had some left over to buy more yarn! My dad was gracious enough to drive me to a LYS nearby. I think he was curious; he has been trying to understand the different kinds of yarn I like so that he can buy gifts. (And it's easier to talk to someone when you understand their interests.) It was beautiful in there! I touched every yarn in the store before I decided on anything and showed Dad around the different . I picked out some of Berroco's Bonsai yarn, and found several balls of Schulana Sojobama yarn in the discount boxes near the register. <div>
I was very excited about my new yarn until I got to talking to the associate at check-out. We had noticed that the hours of operation were a bit bizarre and there was nothing on their online calendar after the end of February. The lady explained that they were closing the store and that there would no longer be a LYS in South Huntsville. She was very upset and wasn't sure what she and the regular customers would do after they closed. I realized the extent of a LYS; it is not just a place to buy nice yarn, it is a community where people who love yarn can meet together for help with projects, learn new skills, and visit with friends who share similar interests. So needless to say, I've been deleting all of my newsletters from the chain craft stores and have decided to buy my yarn primarily from local businesses. Buy Local, friends!<br /><br />

Yesterday, I visited my parents and Mom gave me my birthday gift. I got the addi Click Starter set and a TP reserve holder! Now I can test out the addi Clicks and figure out which set I want. Hooray! Hopefully this next month I will get more made and I will finally finish the red scarf I am knitting. See you at the end of March!<br />

As promised, I have taken pictures of my FO (finished objects) this month for you guys. Some of the photographs are less polished because I took them in a hurry before giving the items to their new owners...I will attempt to be better about taking nice photographs of everything before it leaves my home. That will be the goal for February!</div>

Early this month I dropped by the local yarn store (LYS) for materials for a specific project. A friend wanted to commission me to make her a newborn baby cocoon for a photo-shoot after her baby is born this summer. I told her that I would give it to her as a baby shower gift; I wanted to be able to choose whatever yarn I liked from the store without worrying about adding the additional price to my commission. I'm so glad I did! This yarn is by far to softest I have ever had the pleasure of working with! Here is the <a href="https://www.plymouthyarn.com/yarn/baby-alpaca-grande-item-501" target="_blank">webpage</a> for the yarn on the manufacturer's website if you wish to take a closer look. It was pricey, about 6x the price of the yarn I use most often, but it is definitely worth the extra cost. Plus, it only took half a hank to make the baby cocoon, so I had a lot of extra yarn to play with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Addy my Adipose plushie is modeling the finished cocoon in the photograph I took. I checked out average newborn size on the internet and measured items until I found one that was close in size; Addy was the winner! Plus she makes for a ridiculously adorable model. :P</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
As I mentioned, the cocoon did not take very much yarn. I originally bought two hanks of the alpaca yarn; it is good to have extra in the same dye lot before you start any project. I ended up with a hank and a half left over...and I did not want to stop playing with the yarn. So, using the same stitch and hook as the baby cocoon, I made a hat for myself. The plan was to thread some ribbon through the holes, or attach a bow to the side depending on the day but I have to do so when I wear it. I did notice, however, that the inside and outside give very different looks. I've been wearing it inside out because I like the striping effect. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My brother had a few extra days of vacation after Christmas and spent a day hanging out with us before heading back to Michigan. He told me that he had planned on buying me some yarn for Christmas but was unsure what kind. We ended up going to Walmart for a few items so he told me I could pick out a skein of yarn and he would pay for it. I ended up with a skein of "Boutique Unforgettable" by Red Heart. Normally I cringe a little bit at the mention of Red Heart, but every yarn has its use and this yarn is much nicer than the "Super Saver" line. The Boutique line from Red Heart has a variety of novelty yarns and this one has a slight bit of <a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/slub" target="_blank">slub</a> in it that worked up nicely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I picked out the yarn, I wanted a knitting project to carry with me and I was excited about trying out a new yarn. I was also a little worried about only having one skein and I've been told that knitting takes less yarn than crocheting for similar items. I grabbed some needles and started a stockinette scarf. Last year I was working on an Enterlac knitted blanket and taught myself how to knit stockinette without having to turn my project around every row. (The blanket started getting heavy and my arms were tired of the constant turning.) Also, this technique allows me to knit by feel and I don't have to look down at my work all the time. It's great for basic projects and I can now multitask while knitting. :P</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Stockinette scarf. It needs some serious blocking before I sell it.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
When I was done knitting the scarf, I had some leftover yarn and wanted to try knitting a hat. I found a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/basic-hat-2" target="_blank">basic hat pattern</a> on Ravelry and started working. Unfortunately, I do not have the appropriately sized circular knitting needles...so my gauge was too big for the hat and after a few hours of knitting I ended up keeping what I had started and turned it into a cowl/neckwarmer. I probably should have given it more volume, but I like the way it turned out. It should probably be blocked as well, but I probably won't. I like the personality of the yarn and I'm not sure how blocking this project will affect that. (AKA I am lazy and will only block things when I absolutely must.)<br />

Last week, a coworker saw me wearing one of my crocheted headbands and asked if I would make one for her daughter. She requested a flower, which I am normally not fond of doing but I agreed. I brought some yarn with me to work Tuesday so that she could pick out the colors she wanted. She was shocked when I brought in the finished headband Thursday. They really don't take any time to make, plus I had family dinner night Wednesday and my mother-in-law sewed the flower on for me. (I don't normally add flowers because I am not as comfortable with my sewing skills and I'm always afraid that the project will come apart down the road.)</div>

So, that's what I finished this month. I've also woven some bookmarks on the table loom, but I am leaving them on the loom until I use up the warp to prevent additional waste of the warping thread. I should have pictures of them by next month's post. :)<br /><br />

I don't know if I told most of you guys or not, but my husband changed my Facebook password for me near the start of the new year. I made him an admin on my artist page so I can update there when needed, but I am attempting to break my addiction to Facebook. You'd be amazed how much you can get done when you aren't checking your newsfeed every 15 minutes. I am getting a lot more done around the house and I have been knitting more often, but I haven't been posting pictures of my new work on Facebook because I'm not on my personal page.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I mention this to tell you that I'm going to start posting a photo album at the end of each month to show my recent finished projects. Now that my house is mostly organized (and I am not wasting time on Facebook) I don't feel so overwhelmed and I am starting to get into a true working rhythm. There have been several times when I have made promises about such things in the past, but I should be more successful this time. ;) I have made 5 pieces since we started this little experiment, I have started a new project on the large loom, and I am halfway through knitting another scarf. So there should be a lot more pieces to show you this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As far as the business side of this goes, I was not successful at craft shows in 2014; our theory is that I was going to the wrong kind of shows, but I learned a lot about setting up my work. My plan for now is to just make items until I run out of space to store them and then take everything to the Flea Market at the TN State Fairgrounds. I don't plan on updating the online store or pursuing online sales. I thought about deleting it, but I might do something with it in the future. It's still there, but I'm not focusing on it for the time being.</div>

Well, I've done a fair amount of shopping for supplies in the past week. Last week I mentioned the new table loom and warping board. I've been hard at work dressing the loom for MTSU scarves and will soon have some new woven projects to share with you. Until then, I've got a couple of in-progress photographs for you. This new table loom is a much less daunting task to prepare for weaving, so I'm able to work on it even when I'm at home alone.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been struggling with lighting when I photograph my work, both in-progress and when I complete it. I used to really enjoy photography, but I would often take photographs outside of wildlife and nature. I was never comfortable with setting up lighting and posing items/people. However, I'm finding that a lot of those skills are extremely important for introducing others to my artwork through the internet so I am re-learning that skill set. Today we went to the store and bought some lamps and a few light bulbs to try to improve the lighting in my studio. I should be able to set them up this afternoon and be more open to sharing my WIPs (works in progress) with you.</div>

Okay. I promised that I would make a photo tutorial of the shell headband pattern. This is happening today. Before I work on that though, I need to update you on a special offer on our <a href="http://andromedafibersart.storenvy.com/" target="_blank">Online Store</a>. In an attempt to keep a larger stock of items, I invited my close friend Kelly to post items she has made. I bring this up to inform you that she is raising money for the American Cancer Society through <a href="http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=23072825&fr_id=62689&pg=personal" target="_blank">Making Strides Against Breast Cancer</a> and is offering her handmade items for donations to this cause. She has several items in the online store with "Made by Kelly" in the description and I have marked them with an "On Sale" tag to make them easier to find. The proceeds from the sale of these items between now and the walk this October will be donated. If you live nearby and can pick up the item, then you can also choose to donate the shipping price, or we can refund that back to you. Whichever you prefer. Storenvy does not allow us to list free shipping on our items.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have kept this post in draft form and updated it throughout the day as I worked. Instructions for the pattern are in the captions for each photograph.</div>

Since I have been weaving when on Google Hangouts, I have made much better progress on that lacy shawl. It is officially cut off of the loom and I am working on using macrame techniques for the fringe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW2qZwgucFAJoR2UOU458RuZYADIVCV0y74nNZXSGExN6__E76awC7Cotm5GbONvFuxPKzRmV_7kxVvz_vQVEt2VIsMG7RCHOiwwqmOTabd2hwd4wdXlpaSsA6pFXMY5horOv-9UiDVNpX/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW2qZwgucFAJoR2UOU458RuZYADIVCV0y74nNZXSGExN6__E76awC7Cotm5GbONvFuxPKzRmV_7kxVvz_vQVEt2VIsMG7RCHOiwwqmOTabd2hwd4wdXlpaSsA6pFXMY5horOv-9UiDVNpX/s1600/001.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 13px;">The beginning of the fringe. It is a variation of macrame square knots (aka Solomon's knots)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You may have already seen this picture on my Twitter feed to the right, but I made the decision to continue this pattern versus the other photograph posted. Now that the shawl is off the loom, I am looking to start a new project on there. Unfortunately, the yarn I bought to make a rug seems to be clashing with the warp that is currently on there. I need to remove it and try something different. I'm not sure what yet, but I will figure it out either today or tomorrow.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now for the exciting news that has consumed my thoughts for the past several days: I bought a table loom! It is the exact make and model that I fell in love with in the fibers studio during college. It's a Leclerc Voyageur, for those of you who know about such things. Here's the <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/171384814612?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649" target="_blank">post </a>of it from eBay. I was shocked when I found it on eBay! It is a newer model, so I have been unable to find one used in the past 2-3 years I have been looking. I like this model because it is easy to use and is a great teaching tool. It folds up for easier transport and because the levers are at the top of the loom versus the side, it can be used by both left and right handed people. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not only is it the model I wanted, it is an 8-shaft which means I can experiment with more complicated woven patterns! (Patterns like twill designs and plain weave are made with 4 shafts. There are more advanced patterns out there, and an 8-shaft loom allows me to weave most designs I would ever want to try.) Of course, I will probably play around with twill patterns before I experiment with designs I am unfamiliar with simply because it is the beginning of the school year. Also I need to focus on filling up the store before people start Christmas shopping. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Included with the loom was a warping board and some yarn. This is fortunate because I needed something to count out warp threads for the new loom. I have a few bags of warp that I counted out for the floor loom when I still had access to a warping mill in college. Unfortunately these would not fit on the new loom, so I am very grateful to have the warping board included.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The loom was listed as local pick-up only. In Michigan. 9 hours away. Fortunately I have a younger brother who was visiting up there. And he was awesome enough to go look at the loom for me and is bringing it back to Tennessee today. So, sometime tonight I will have my new loom in my hands. Hopefully the floor loom, Loomie, will not get jealous. I tend to have multiple projects going at the same time, so I shouldn't start neglecting either of the looms or my crochet hooks and knitting needles.</div>

A few of my friends have commissioned hats from me recently. A photographer friend asked me to make him a hat when he was visiting to teach me about lighting product photography. It is crocheted, but I need to check to make sure it fits his head before I do any finishing on it and photograph it for my records. Also, one of my cousins convinced her mom to pay me to make a "One Direction" hat for the concert she is going to this month. She wanted a slouchy beanie with their logo on it. I loved her conversation with her mom: "You'd be helping Andrea with her new business!" She is much better at marketing than I am. :P </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyways, here is a picture she sent me of her new hat: </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1fiVfUYpGCJ1m4-b2TufaTIB6hFf5leA7SfF8rEv_9jLL1jgkFQ_xEIFDnir1iO751tcRI1XCjEknYdbDqVotv6QsCPIC78tUBfp3PwYjNHzFF1dtcUNf04Rd3ZOKnjaPGLdsRJH85F4X/s1600/One+Direction.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1fiVfUYpGCJ1m4-b2TufaTIB6hFf5leA7SfF8rEv_9jLL1jgkFQ_xEIFDnir1iO751tcRI1XCjEknYdbDqVotv6QsCPIC78tUBfp3PwYjNHzFF1dtcUNf04Rd3ZOKnjaPGLdsRJH85F4X/s1600/One+Direction.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 13px;">1D is One Direction's logo</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also am making a baby hat for a different cousin who is about to be a new father, a couple of hats for an art trade, and a hat for my cousin who was just diagnosed with cancer. (I have a lot of cousins. I may have to start giving them nicknames for when I mention them on here. Let's see...First one mentioned we will call Cool K, second will be Jellyfish, and third will be Power Ranger.) I have finished the snowflake hat for Power Ranger's sister and I love it! But I can't send one hat up to the family before finishing both of them. That would be foolish on multiple levels. So for now it is sitting in my yarn studio waiting to be shipped.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Hello again everyone! Over the past few months I have been focused on learning how to take care of the house and cooking more. Now that I'm starting to get into a routine with all of that, I am looking at my yarn and how I can schedule my time to include making more items. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The next few posts are updates on all the snazzy things I've been working on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Motivation</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The friends I've made from Jon Acuff's "30 Days of Hustle" have been extremely encouraging and motivating. I wanted to give them a quick shout out and all the hugs the internet can muster! Several of us will pull up Google Hangouts and work on our goals at the same time to cut down on some of the loneliness that often accompanies working at home. I usually end up crocheting or weaving when we mute our microphones and get to work. It's exciting to introduce people to my yarn interests and I love sharing what I've been working on (which is part of the reason I've been neglecting the blog, so I apologize for that).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've also started up a crochet group with a friend that meets on Friday nights. While we don't have many people join us every week, we always have fun and end up getting a lot of work done. About three weeks ago I brought a friend and taught her some basics of crochet. She has already made several items and has become a "Crazy Yarn Lady" who crochets wherever she goes! Her enthusiasm is contagious!</div>

I was going to warn you but I never got around to writing a 'Coming Soon' post. I'm extremely nervous about this venture, but I'm excited to extend my business beyond just my family and friends.<br />

I've wanted to make a bucket list for a while, so I was excited when I saw that one of the other 'Hustlers' has a blog about bucket list and a really easy to follow way to make one. I am using <a href="http://ryaneller.com/bucketlist/bucket-list-by-threes/" target="_blank">this post</a> to build my list. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a more goals than this, but I haven't found a way to word them yet so this list is a work-in-progress.</div>

So, I don't really have a big long post for today, but I wanted to show you my finished product for the last baby shower I went to:</div>

<br />
This is what happens when I ask you what colors you like for baby items and you tell me "We are decorating the nursery 'Monster's Inc.' themed."<br />
<br />
Also, I've joined a email group..thing called '30 Days of Hustle'. So you should see me making more progress toward that booth goal I mentioned back in October. Hopefully.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today when checking my Facebook Newsfeed I noticed one of my friends posted an interesting link. It was a challenge by someone named <a href="http://acuff.me/about/" target="_blank">Jon Acuff</a>. The challenge is to empty a shelf on your bookcase and fill it up with books that you read between now and the end of next year. (Click <a href="http://acuff.me/2013/12/empty-shelf-challenge/" target="_blank">here</a> to see the original post.) Seeing as how I utterly failed at my Goodreads challenge this year, and I had recently organized our bookshelves, I decided this might be a good place to start. Here is a picture of my empty shelf: </div>
<div>
<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi1E-uCnbOJiUDKxDW7tzck8qti0YGPS_p7Ugaizt_15qC3xQ76HZETG2jXJPXSFn8MQRpL2zkqwuXLLWQApFBJOobTqRHl_KFOU8lfSanvQYKY-qu5Iejj5uL1aOYmNfQApHrN8BTDcTn/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi1E-uCnbOJiUDKxDW7tzck8qti0YGPS_p7Ugaizt_15qC3xQ76HZETG2jXJPXSFn8MQRpL2zkqwuXLLWQApFBJOobTqRHl_KFOU8lfSanvQYKY-qu5Iejj5uL1aOYmNfQApHrN8BTDcTn/s1600/016.JPG" height="425" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Notice the overflowing shelves around it. This was the shelf with the least books to take off.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The husband has suggested that we just buy a new bookcase and fill it up with books we read this year...but that seems a little more daunting. Maybe when I finish this one I will get started on a whole bookcase. We need another one anyways.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He also wants to do this with our video games. I may have just created a monster. :P</div>

<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Now, I haven't participated in setting New Year's Resolutions for quite some time. In my experience they are often vague ideas that usually don't have a plan for implementation and never amount to much. This isn't just a 'New Year' problem for me though, I am pretty bad about setting up new goals throughout the year that don't get implemented. I plan them all out but have a hard time following through and need some accountability. Obviously I am failing at my goal of staying off the computer in the mornings (I started writing this around 9:30 am). But I am succeeding at blogging more often! So today is a bit of a win-lose situation.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">About a week or so ago, my mother was giving me some advice on selling my projects in different avenues. She encouraged me to consider getting a booth at a local art festival or at the Nashville Flea Market that is held one weekend a month. I told her that if she would sit with me at a booth next year, then I would 'make pretty things to sell'. I meant it as a bit of a joke, and it was one of those vague ideas mentioned above that sounds nice but has no real plan. However, this morning when I was reading through</span><span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> the </span><a href="http://www.molly-greene.com/101-blog-topic-ideas/" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;" target="_blank">list</a><span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> of blog topic ideas that I linked in my last post, I found this:</span></div>
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span>
<strong style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">61.</strong><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> A list of steps you’ll need to cover before you move (or publish a book, or start a blog, or open a restaurant).</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Well then.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">I have a desire to be able to sell more of my work, and Mom did have a pretty awesome idea. It will need a lot of work and dedication, and setting some smaller goals would be a great place to start. </span></span><span style="color: #555555; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Since I am attempting to find activities to work on in the mornings that will hopefully keep me off the computer, I can work on reaching my smaller goals during that time period. Now that I have a time set up for working, I <i>should </i>be more likely to succeed. I will still need accountability however, which is where you guys come in. I will be telling my mom about this post and this is my written permission to her: Please help me stay on track. You shouldn't need to nag (because I am determined to work on this), but I will need someone to talk to about my progress and remind me of my goal when I start to lose focus. So here goes:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<b>Steps for getting a booth</b></h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: left;"><b>Work on projects to sell during my designated time of 8 am - 12 pm on MWF. </b>(A side note to this step is to start waking up by 8 am on these days. It is fall break this week, so I've been off my sleep schedule but this shouldn't be a problem to implement starting Monday.)</li>
<ul>
<li>Baby items, hat & scarf sets, and some more artistic items should be included in my projects to provide a variety of price range and increase chances that people will stop.</li>
<li>Make an Excel worksheet to keep inventory.</li>
</ul>
<li><b>Price items.</b></li>
<ul>
<li>Decide on set prices for each item </li>
<li>Make labels for the table or for each item as necessary.</li>
</ul>
<li><b>Decide where.</b></li>
<ul>
<li>My current ideas are: the Nashville flea market in October or November, a Christmas show in Murfreesboro, or an art festival in Nashville/Murfreesboro.</li>
<li>Once I decide where, I need to pick a booth location of the ones available.</li>
<ul>
<li>Set aside money for booth and applicable taxes. <a href="http://www.nashvilleexpocenter.org/expo/fleamarket/rules.asp" target="_blank">Nashville Flea Market rules</a></li>
<li>Fill out vendor application. <a href="http://www.nashvilleexpocenter.org/pdfs/VendorApplication.pdf" target="_blank">Nashville FM</a></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<li><b>?</b></li>
</ol>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
I'm not sure what else I will need to do, so this list will have to be altered as we go. My first goal is to start working on items to sell, so that's what I will go do now. :)</div>

Well guys, once again I find myself back here and ashamed of my lack of consistency with blogging. So, I have challenged myself to be better and become more responsible with my time. This has been a constant thread in my life recently and I have decided that I will also use it to become better blogger as well as the other goals I am currently working on. I searched the web for ideas for becoming a better blogger and found <a href="http://www.molly-greene.com/101-blog-topic-ideas/" target="_blank">this</a> wonderful post written by <a href="http://www.molly-greene.com/about/" target="_blank">Molly Greene</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have started limiting my electronics usage because I am addicted to mindless entertainment that I find on the internet and have little to no self-control once I turn on the computer. I have been leaving the computer off in the morning before I go to work (I work the afternoon shift at my one job and don't go to work until 2 pm on MWF). So far I have succeeded at completely cleaning and organizing my master closet/laundry room and have almost finished the process of warping my loom. *happy dance* Soon I will be able to make honeycomb patterned shawls on my loom. This will be my first project of a larger scale on my loom and I'm finally going to be using it to its full potential! Photographs will be posted on here soon, I hope. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In addition to taking care of my own things better and blogging more, I have challenged both Luke and myself to cook more at home. We have a nasty habit of eating fast food every meal due to our work schedules. I don't get off work until 6 pm or so every weekday and the husband has no consistency in his work schedule. So, last weekend we boiled 10 chicken breasts and made several meals. I made a chicken and rice casserole Sunday night and Luke made some awesome stir-fry Monday. We still have a fair amount of chicken leftover, so I am planning on making this <a href="http://www.food.com/recipe/crock-pot-creamy-italian-chicken-19859" target="_blank">Crock Pot Chicken Recipe</a> this weekend. I plan on making a separate page on here for the recipes I use and our opinions on them. I don't know that anyone else will care about it, but this page will help me keep my thoughts and favored recipes organized. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyways, if at all possible, please attempt to hold me accountable to these goals. Thanks!</div>

So far I'm attempting to keep my tweets related to my artwork. This way when I don't blog as frequently, there is still documentation of what I'm working on.<br />
<br />
I've added a live feed on the side of this blog over there ----><br />
<br />
Oh, if you wish to follow me on Twitter the link is on the live feed...or you can type @andromedafibers in the twitter search bar. I've been using my phone to take pictures of recently finished projects and current WIPs, so Twitter stays more up-to-date than here.<br />
<br />
Also, I've started making toddler hats for the children at work and have been writing down the pattern as I design each hat. If you see a picture on my twitter of a hat you like, let me know and I'll post the pattern on here for you. So far all of the hats are of my design. If that changes, I will link the original pattern on the picture.Andromedahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001698668018659392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387264103689517632.post-59009660270858663472013-08-04T20:08:00.000-05:002013-08-04T20:08:31.662-05:00Navy Hat Pattern needs TestersHey guys, I know I've been sporadic about posting on here. I have been a terrible "yarnie" and have been playing MMO's recently instead of working on new projects. However, this week I have started on Christmas presents and went back through my old written patterns. I found a shorthand pattern for the hat below and have finished converting the pattern to a version that normal crocheters can follow, but I need a couple of people to test it for me and make sure I've written everything out properly.<br />
<br />
To be a tester you will need:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Worsted weight yarn (I used Simply Soft and Simply Soft Paints for the two I made, so I would prefer that you use a different brand to make sure it works across brands.)</li>
<li>Size G crochet hook, and possibly a couple of surrounding sizes to make gauge.</li>
<li>A measuring tape or ruler.</li>
<li>A critical eye.</li>
</ul>
<br />

So, send me an email or comment on this post if you wish to test for me and I will get back to you. Hopefully I can get the pattern tested quickly and get a copy of it posted on here soon.<br />

Wow...I haven't blogged for quite some time. So, I'm still knitting on that Enterlac blanket. I love it, even though as a blanket it does take a lot of time. I've also been working on rewarping the loom, but I haven't made it very far...I got on a knitting kick yesterday and started a new scarf instead. I will post a picture of it when it is finished. I was going to reproduce the scarf below that I got in an art trade a few years ago...the friend who made it was new to knitting and tied knots at each color change instead of weaving in the ends. Being bamboo yarn, the knots have been slipping out even more quickly than expected and the scarf has started unraveling. The moral of this story? Don't EVER just tie knots in your yarn. Take the extra time and do it right. The time spent weaving in all those pesky ends is definitely worth it in the long run. In any case, I knew that she talked about 'moss stitch' when she was making the scarf, so I looked up the stitch pattern online and decided to make the scarf <a href="http://www.creativeknittingmagazine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-11-08-16.40.58.jpg" target="_blank">here</a> instead. I'm using a different weight yarn, so mine is turning out quite lacy and beautiful. I love it already.</div>

Anyways, I've been asked to do a few commission pieces. (Yay money! Spend it on yarn!) I finished the one commission for my friend Mrs. Wilson. See her blog <a href="http://thewilsonbuzz.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">here</a>. She wanted a beret, scarf, and a pair of fingerless gloves...so I made them...quickly. Mainly because this girl is AWESOME and I knew if I didn't get started right away I would forget and/or never get said items finished. It also helped that she wanted a very simple design. All of the pieces were made with Caron Simply Soft Paints, Color Spring Brook.</div>

So, I finally made an Etsy account...we'll see what happens with that. Here's my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/people/AndromedaFibersArt?ref=si_pr" target="_blank">profile</a>. I don't know that I'll sell stuff on there...unless you beg. I might if you beg. :P I don't know what I would try to sell since most of my projects are made with specific people in mind. I did buy a <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/112692928/crochet-pattern-the-baylie-bear-cowl" target="_blank">pattern </a>on there for a different commission. Hopefully that one will pan out. The lady wishes to buy the yarn for it, but keeps forgetting/running out of time. </div>

Well, only one of my testers finished checking my Dad's Vandy Hat for errors...so you guys will have to let me know if you have problems with this pattern. Oh, and for you guys unfamiliar with what I mean by "Vandy" it's short for Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. My parents go to a lot of their sports events and Dad wanted a hat to match the scarf I made for him a few years ago to wear to games. <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">My dad has a fairly large head, so this pattern is written for people who have trouble finding hats big enough to fit.</span></div>

Well, the beanie hat is in testing and will be offered on here when my testers are finished with it. We'll see how that goes. I stopped using Ravelry for now due to a bunch of random things you don't want to hear about, so my testers are mainly <a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/14556857933410037484" target="_blank">Stitchingupastorm </a>and some friends from the knitting group...which means I have no deadline on how long they can take to work on it...and have no idea when you will see the pattern. So you are left wondering and waiting. :P Once that is done, I will be sure to get some more patterns tested and available on here, but it might wait until after the Christmas season. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On a happier note, we officially are moved into the new apartment and are mostly finished unpacking. I'm happy to report that I am now in possession of a 'yarn closet'! Because who doesn't want a whole closet full of awesome? I really should take a picture of it with my camera, but I've been a bit busy and lazy...I'll fix it after Thanksgiving. And now that I've spent several hours on the internet watching <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Tobuscus?feature=g-all-lik" target="_blank">Tobuscus </a>videos, I think I'll get off the couch and do something productive...like blissfully sit in the yarn closet.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So, for those of you who have made my <a href="http://andromedasfibersart.blogspot.com/2012/05/easy-shell-headband-pattern.html" target="_blank">Easy Shell Headband</a>, this is the adjusted version for child sizing. I altered it to fit a child who was around 5-years-old, so if you are looking to make one for preteen children it would be better just to alter the number of chains at the end of the original pattern. </span></div>

I figured out a way to convert the <a href="http://andromedasfibersart.blogspot.com/2012/05/easy-shell-headband-pattern.html" target="_blank">Easy Shell Headband Pattern</a> to child size. Should I add that as a note on the original post, or write it out as a separate pattern on here for people? Also, I wrote out a beanie hat pattern I designed on Friday and was wondering if anyone would like to test it for errors before I share it on here.<br />
<br />
If no one comments on this, I will assume that these patterns are not wanted and will not worry about posting them...so please comment if you read this so that I will know to continue forward. (Even if you don't have an opinion, just let me know you saw it.)Andromedahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001698668018659392noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387264103689517632.post-30587632201819918362012-10-21T12:52:00.001-05:002012-10-21T12:53:37.378-05:00Fibers Update<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As promised, this post will be an update on everything that has been going on in my world fiber-wise.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First off, I finally finished another scarf on my loom. I like to call it the "brick-by-brick" scarf because it alternates black and red. It looked like bricks to me when I was making it, in any case. What do you think? It end has a twill pattern that switches directions in the black section and is a bit stiff while the middle is just a loose plain weave alternating the colors. It was my first time I had tried weaving loosely, and it is very nice to wear.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After I finished that scarf, I taught my mother-in-law to weave. She loved it! It only took her one afternoon to finish her scarf because she was enjoying playing around with the loom so much. I don't have a picture of her scarf, but it is beautiful and very well crafted, especially considering it was her first time.</div>

These next two pictures are the scarf I have started on my loom right now. I'm using Caron Simply Soft Paints and it is turning out beautifully. I might see if I can get it finished this week so that my mother-in-law can have a chance to weave another scarf before Luke and I move out.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Okay, now for the rest of the update from yesterday's adventure. A few of the girls from my knitting group and I went to the local fibers festival after the ACS walk. There were llamas and angora bunnies there that people could pet and all sorts of unspun fiber, yarn, and other products to buy. I didn't have any cash or my checkbook with me, so I had to borrow money from a friend. There were just so many amazing things there that I couldn't resist. We walked around for a while and I finally decided to buy some fiber that one of my friends is going to spin into yarn for me and a ski shuttle made by a man who does woodcarving. There were door prizes there, but I wasn't going to sign up because I didn't come in the main door...luckily I was convinced to sign up and ended up winning a scarf. It's 100% wool and is scratchy to me, so I won't probably wear it very often/at all. It might end up getting gifted to someone in the future.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Right now I am making an enterlac knitted blanket in addition to the scarf that is currently on the loom. I think that covers just about everything recent....Oh! I almost forgot! I crocheted a bunch of the shell headbands to sell for donations at the knit-a-thon fundraiser we did for ACS. I've made several more, but I still have to weave in the ends before I can sell/donate/wear them. I have friends who think I should sell them on Etsy, but I don't have an account on there yet and don't know if I really want to have to deal with figuring out how to ship them. Do you guys have any suggestions, ideas, or advice on that?</div>

Well now, it has been a very long time since I've posted on here. I hope you guys haven't been too disappointed. :P I am now employed at a local child care center working with one-year-olds on weekday afternoons, so I no longer sit on the couch all day and goof off. It's good, because I was gaining too much weight and was getting bored of having no set routine. In any case, both of those things have been resolved. I love working with the children! We have an awesome class to work with, but I probably won't say anything else about it. We aren't really supposed to discuss the children with other people, and I imagine posting stories about them online would be why that rule is in place. :) Luke is doing well too. He got a job at Kroger in the meat department. He's still looking for his career job, but he's making good money and has room for advancement if takes a while to find a job more suited to his field of study.</div>

Also we have officially found an apartment and signed the lease for it! I won't tell you all of the crazy details that went along with that process, but I will say that God's hand has definitely been guiding us through everything. The apartment is 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms, so I will have a separate room to keep Pippin from having unsupervised access to my yarn and anything else we don't want her destroying. She is pretty good about not causing trouble when we are in the room with her, but sometimes she can't control herself and tries to eat my lovely projects and supplies. She is a cat after all! In any case, we will be moving in a few weeks and will no longer be living with my mother-in-law. *excitement dance* Don't get me wrong, I love my in-laws and we all get along really well, but it is nice when you are married to be able to have your own place. Plus Pippin tends to bully my mother-in-law's cat, Whiskers, so it will be nice for him to get his home back. The only things we have to do before we move in are get Pippin her annual Rabies shot, set up utilities, and pack up the stuff that isn't already in storage. Oh, and learn how to plan meals better so that we don't eat out so much. lol</div>

Wow, I just checked my old posts and have nothing about the knitting group! I suppose I'll have to start from the beginning on that. When we moved to the area, I was looking for a yarn related group to join so that I would know more people and begin to make friends. I was very lonely. For a little while I was going to two a week, one on Friday nights at a local yarn store and the other on Monday nights at a local coffee shop. I liked both pretty well, but the one on Friday nights was at an awkward time for eating dinner and the women are outside of my generation. That's not normally a problem, but it was far enough removed that I didn't understand most of the references they made and was usually lost during the social conversations. Now that I have my job I wouldn't be able to go to that one even if I was still trying to, but it was fun to meet all of the people there. The knitting group on Monday night is more varied in age; I am still the youngest in the group, but several of the people are closer to my stage in life. And I understand more of the references that are brought up. So, I decided to continue going there and have made some awesome friends!</div>

This month has been Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the knitting group has been raising funds for ACS (the American Cancer Society). We had a 'knit-a-thon' near the beginning of the month to help with our fundraising and were featured in a local newspaper! It was pretty exciting. Hmmm...maybe I can find a picture from that...hold on a second. Nevermind, I'll have to do that in a different post because this one is getting too long. In any case, we raised quite a bit that night and with other donations we ended up exceeding our fundraising goal. We raised $1083.81 for breast cancer research! Woo! The 5-mile walk in Nashville was yesterday, so needless to say, my legs feel like pudding. Only a few of us were able to make it out there, but it was definitely a wonderful experience. Afterwards we went to a fibers festival that was held nearby, but that will have to wait for my "Fibers Update" post later today. :)</div>
